Therefore, if an adult is in love with two individuals at once, both of who are at least 18, aware of and in agreement with the nature of the relationship, should they be allowed to get married? What is your stance on the issue and why?

Marriage Equality Marriage equality has been a politically salient issue in the United States for at least the last half century, and was only finally addressed, in the context of gay couples, by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2015. Although the ideal of equality is central to the debate over gay marriage, much of the periphery rhetoric includes sentiments such as “gay marriage doesn’t hurt anyone” and “you should be able to marry the person you love.” If you support gay marriage for these reasons, would you also support polygamy for similar reasons? The argument has been made that the United States already supports a form of polygamy, which would be multiple marriages at different times rather than at once. Most of us know individuals who have been married two and three times; some of us know people who have been married four and five times. Although this practice isn’t celebrated in our society, it is nonetheless legal and to a certain extent socially acceptable. Recently, the Utah state legislature passed an expanded anti-bigamy law (check out link below for more information). Applying the same rationale to polygamist as gays, should polygamy be legalized? For the sake of discussion, we will assume polygamy would be regulated in a similar manner as today’s marriages, which means if a divorce isn’t amicable, a judge intervenes and determines child custody arrangements, monetary issues, property distribution, etc. Therefore, if an adult is in love with two individuals at once, both of who are at least 18, aware of and in agreement with the nature of the relationship, should they be allowed to get married? What is your stance on the issue and why? Be sure to keep it consistent with your position on gay marriage.

Create a table which includes the following data for each of the above selected countries: infant mortality rate, total fertility rate, population under age 15, life expectancy, percent of urban population, and Gross National Income in purchasing power parity per capita (GNI PPP).

Create a coherent and complete report that explores significant aspects of human population growth by following guided questions. Your report should flow nicely from one topic to another and should NOT contain a question and answer format. Answer all questions in the form of descriptive or explanatory paragraphs. Be sure to cite information within the body of the report and to list references at the end in the form of a bibliography. You may use any widely accepted method for citation (APA, MLA, CBE, etc) or the abbreviated method described on the course website.

Your report should include the following sections (with section headings): title (and your name), Introduction, World and Regional Population Trends, Total Fertility Rate and Replacement Fertility, Trends in the United States, Conclusion and Bibliography.

Several resources are provided in this lab assignment, you are encouraged to use these and to find additional information on the web, in your textbook, or other sources. REMEMBER to cite information. Citation provides an indication of your research into the topic and provides the reader with a way to further explore a topic by going to your references.

Briefly describe each of these nations. What are they like economically, geographically, and socially? Describe the trends you see in these data. What conclusions can you draw from a comparison of birth rates and death rates among these countries? After examining the data, can you make any statements regarding birth rate, death rate, lifestyles, economic status, and social structure?

Based on what you’ve noticed from observing the population statistics for countries of the world, what can you say about what is happening with population in general around the world? Is world population growth uniform around the globe?

Use the current World Population Data Sheet to complete the following:

  1. Choose four countries whose populations are growing at a 1.0 percent rate of natural increase or less (some with negative rates of natural increase are decreasing).
  2. Choose four countries whose populations are growing at 3.0 percent or more. Do not include the countries of Western Asia or the Middle East because they represent special cases and will be discussed later in item #5.
  3. Calculate, display, and explain the doubling time for at least one of each of the countries examined in steps 1 and 2.
  4. Create a table which includes the following data for each of the above selected countries: infant mortality rate, total fertility rate, population under age 15, life expectancy, percent of urban population, and Gross National Income in purchasing power parity per capita (GNI PPP). Examine the

table created above for important differences, and note what you observe for each variable by group. For example (obviously, your table does not need to look exactly like this one):

High Growth Countries Low –Growth Countries

Infant Mortality High infant mortality Low infant mortality

Conduct research using the CSU Online Library to find at least two articles on a company that heavily uses electronic media and e-mail.

Conduct research using the CSU Online Library to find at least two articles on a company that heavily uses electronic
media and e-mail. You may need to visit the companys website policy page or other sources, in addition to the library
article, in order to provide a complete response to the points listed below. For example, using the search terms Starbucks
social media campaign in an internet search engine such as Google.com, Yahoo.com, or Bing.com will return results of
several articles discussing Starbucks use of social media. Searching for Starbucks security breach returns several
articles discussing vulnerabilities and electronic security challenges the company has faced. Additionally, if you visit the
Starbucks website, they have a link to their privacy policy on the bottom of the page. Write a report of your findings that is
at least three pages in length in a Word document to address the following:
Briefly introduce the company you have chosen to research.
Summarize the two articles you found in the CSU Online Library.
Describe how these companies are using electronic media and e-mail.
o Are they using electronic media and e-mail in their daily operations, media campaigns, customer relations, or
other ways? Are any of their uses groundbreaking or novel?
o What types of media are they using? Who is their audience?
o How do they mitigate and respond to security threats in using electronic media and e-mail? What about
security issues faced by their customers?
Your paper must use APA style guidelines and include a title, abstract, and reference page. Be sure to list all sources in
the reference page and use in-text citations where appropriate. The title, abstract, and reference pages are not included in
the required minimum page length.

Science is the only way to discover truth (or not). Explain why you agree or disagree with this statement.

These papers will be graded both on CONTENT and on STYLE (see below for more information about this). If you have questions about matters of style, please consult a style manual (any commonly accepted reference style is acceptable, but for your information I prefer Chicago Style).

Students are asked to keep in mind that this is an argumentative essay. You should have a clear thesis, and make clear points supporting your thesis in each paragraph.

• You can use 1st person perspective (ie: ‘I’) but be wary of resorting to simple opinion to prove/substantiate your premises.

• As mentioned above, style is important, as is correct spelling and grammar/syntax. These things are always important in any situation, but especially so in the context of an academic paper. There are many style manuals available for free online (or in print from the Library) that can help you with these matters.

A BIBLIOGRAPHY IS A NECESSARY: a bibliography that clearly references all of the print and electronic sources you’ve looked at in order to write your paper. You may use both primary and secondary sources in this paper.

• You should use at least three (3) different sources to gain a balanced sense of the topic at hand. All sources (including the course readings, if you decide to use them) should appear in your bibliography. Use the library’s resources. A quick note: I would avoid non-peer-reviewed, Internet-website sources, as they are notoriously unreliable. Having mentioned this, peer-reviewed journal articles found online through the Library’s electronic resources are acceptable.

ADEQUATE REFERENCING IS REQUIRED: If you use another person’s words (or their ideas) you need to reference that by either an endnote or a footnote, or an in-text citation. Your referencing format (ie: APA, MLA, Turabian, Chicago, etc…) is up to you provided that you are consistent throughout and that it is a commonly-accepted method. I will discuss this in class, but please feel free to ask me if you have questions about this.

A few incidentals and tips to keep in mind when writing your paper:

• This is YOUR paper: I’m not looking for you to simply regurgitate information from other people! Make your own arguments and support them with your sources. Very few things are more annoying than an essay that has referenced every single word in the darned thing!

• If you want to quote/reference/cite my online lectures, please provide the appropriate referencing for that (again, this information should be available in any decent style guide).

• Please make sure you keep a copy of your completed paper on your computer, in the event that it gets misplaced for whatever reason.

Please write your essay on one of the following topics:

1) Science is the only way to discover truth (or not). Explain why you agree or disagree with this statement.

2) The development of technology is determinative; its expansion occurs beyond the ability of human freedom to control it.

3) Recently-developed social networking websites (such as Facebook) are corrosive to ‘real’ community.
