Electricity and Electromagnetic Induction

Unit 3 Discussion: Electricity and Electromagnetic Induction
No unread replies. No replies.
In this unit you are learning about the concepts related to energy and heat. It’s important to not only understand these fundamental concepts but apply them.
Use the Internet or ECPI Online Library to find at least ONE professional or scholarly source that discusses how one of the following is applied or observed in the real world:
Note: Choose One Topic From Below
Electrical charge
Electric current
Electromagnetic induction
It is recommended that you try to find research related to your field of study.
Please include the following in your initial post:
• Provide a brief summary of your research.
• Explain how the research illustrates the concept(s) you are discussing.
• Discuss any ethical or practical considerations that might arise from this application of the concept. These might include (but are not limited to) environmental impact, safety concerns, or issues of effectiveness.
• Your summary must be in your own words.
• Be sure to cite your source(s) and include the URL.
Note: Do not choose an application very similar to one already chosen by a classmate.
HINT for finding information: When performing a search, input the words “Technology using” or “Applications of” _________ (type in the concept) in the search box of a search engine). Some possible sources to search:
• Phys.org
• Gizmag.com
• Cnet.com
• Sciencenews.org
• Sciencemag.org

It’s important not only to understand the fundamental concepts of physics, but also to apply them. Please use the Internet or ECPI Online Library to research at least ONE professional or scholarly article that shows how different wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum are applied in real life. Some key words you might consider using for your search are:
• Ultraviolet light
• Infrared light
• Electromagnetic spectrum
• Radio frequencies

Note: If a classmate has chosen the same application of a concept, you must research another application of that concept.

Natural Hazards”

“Natural Hazards” Please respond to the following:
• Access the “USGS Hazards” website under the Natural Hazards terms section of the Science Corner. You can also access the website at http://www.usgs.gov/natural_hazards/. Choose one (1) of the following geologic hazards: earthquake, landslide, or flood. Next, determine the key factors that influence the occurrence of your chosen hazard. Then, analyze the human role in elevating the risks of occurrence, as well as mitigation strategies to minimize damage and loss of life.
• Watch the video titled “Meet the Volcanoes” (2 min 57 sec) under the Volcanism terms section of the Science Corner. You can also view the video at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/earth/meet-volcanoes.html. Next, use the Internet or Strayer Library to research articles on the Mauna Loa Volcano in Hawaii and Mount Pinatubo in Philippines. Based on the type (i. e., cinder cone, shield, or composite) of volcano, and its common eruption characteristics, speculate on the societal and environmental damages that Mauna Loa and Mount Pinatubo would cause if they erupted today. Justify your response with evidence from your research.
• Describe three (3) ways that Wegener’s continental drift hypothesis has helped to shape modern plate tectonic theory, and then explain why his hypothesis was not widely accepted by his peers when first proposed. Next, analyze at least two (2) types of evidence used to support plate tectonic theory.

Why did engineers and planners think it was a good thing, at the time, to destroy the Snowy River?
