Assignment 2 – Image Classification
Instructions
Produce both an unsupervised and a supervised classification of the Old Junee Landsat ETM image. Compare the results of both techniques to the ground truth map. Use these results to discuss the value of using image classification for mapping land cover categories. What are the limitations of classification? What are the advantages/disadvantages of using supervised or unsupervised classification? How might the image classification results be better than ground truth mapping?
The report should contain the following information as a minimum (use other headings or sections as appropriate):
Introduction
The introduction should develop a clear aim. Include a description of the study area + background to image classification.
Method
Describe the steps undertaken to create your two classification images and conduct the accuracy assessment. This section really needs to be written so that another expert in image analysis could repeat the processing. It needs to include all of the important details without describing every single button pushed.
Results
As a minimum, include images of both of your final classifications along with any important statistics and a accuracy assessments. An image of the ground truth map will also be useful.
Discussion
Compare both classification images to the ground truth map. How well do they match the map? What are the errors? etc.
Conclusion
Address the aim(s) as set out in your introduction. How well was the aim addressed by the report? What improvement could be made if repeated?
