Explain and defend the rationale behind recommending the model.

James O’Hara, an ABC client, is a single,
37-year-old, self-employed plastic surgeon who currently owns a condominium in
Tiburon, CA, worth $1.4 million. James is doing quite well financially. His
gross income from his practice last year exceeded $350,000. Upon graduation
from medical school, he began investing in stocks and opened an IRA. He made
his selections mostly on the basis of articles he read describing good
investment opportunities in various personal finance magazines. Because of his
hectic schedule, Dr. O’Hara has seldom taken the time to evaluate his portfolio
performance, but he feels it is not quite up to par.
Dr. O’Hara currently has about $350,000 in
investable funds with about $130,000 currently invested in several stocks at a
local discount brokerage house, as well as an IRA account funded with three
mutual funds that are currently worth about $170,000. After working with a
staff financial planner and investment advisor at ABC, the following investment
strategies have been drafted for Dr. O’Hara based on his financial needs and
objectives:

Dr. O’Hara will
contribute the maximum allowable yearly contribution to his newly
established private practice 401(k) plan, which will also be managed
and monitored by ABC. The account is to be funded with only one
well-performing mutual fund. The fund investment
objectives must include the ability to earn market returns consistently
and minimal yearly management fees.
A
sum of $30,000 is to be earmarked for Dr. O’Hara’s upcoming wedding and
honeymoon trip in June of next year. Dr.
O’Hara wants this portion invested
in a very safe place with no expense, sales, or early withdrawal charges.
Dr. O’Hara is also planning to assist his nephew with medical school expenses in 3 years. To
this end, he wants $60,000 earmarked in an account with higher than
current certificate of deposit or money market rates but minimal market
volatility.
Dr. O’Hara’s average, long-term (5 years and on) minimum required rate on equity
investments is 9%.
Dr. O’Hara’s risk
tolerance questionnaire indicates that he is a moderately aggressive
investor.

Assignment:
You are asked to assist the ABC financial
advisor in charge of Dr. O’Hara’s account with the compilation of a
presentation package. Present the information in a report of 3–4 pages or 8–10
PowerPoint slides including 200–350 words of speaker notes on each slide that
covers the following:

Construct an asset allocation model for Dr. O’Hara
given his financial objectives and risk tolerance level.

Explain and defend the rationale behind recommending
the model.
The asset allocation must have between 3 and 5 asset
classes.

Recommend a suitable investment alternative for Dr.
O’Hara’s wedding and his nephew’s tuition assistance objectives.

Thoroughly explain and defend your recommendations.

Recommend a suitable mutual fund for Dr. O’Hara’s
401(k) plan. Provide detailed information about the fund, including the
following:

The name of the fund
Its portfolio manager’s name, experience, and
qualifications
Its investment philosophy and strategy
How long this fund been in existence
Its current NAV
Its yearly management fees, which must not exceed 1%
of amount invested
The fund’s 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year returns*
An assessment of some of the risks involved in
investing in this fund

*Please
do notpick a mutual fund that has been in existence for less
than 5 years because it may not have an established track record. Providing a
link to a fund Web page is not an acceptable substitute for your executive
summary for the client.

Assuming a risk-free rate of 4%, the following data
were derived after a close examination of Dr. O’Hara’s IRA mutual fund
portfolio:

Do you agree with Schlesinger that we continue to need big government to counteract corporate interests and achieve fairness for all in American life? Explain.

1. The expense of government regulation is not limited to the direct cost of administering the various agencies. Explain and offer examples of the other expenses produced by regulation. 2. To the extent the federal government achieves deregulation, what substitutes will citizens find for protection? 3. Pulitzer Prize–winning author and presidential adviser Arthur Schlesinger: The assault on the national government is represented as a disinterested movement to “return” power to the people. But the withdrawal of the national government does not transfer power to the people. It transfers power to the historical rival of the national government and the prime cause of its enlargement—the great corporate interests.89 a. Using 19th- and 20th-century American economic history, explain Schlesinger’s claim that corporate interests are the primary cause of big government. b. An Analysis of Gender Socialization

An Analysis of Gender Socialization

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

  • Competency 1: Examine how theory and sociological concepts apply to everyday life.
    • Identify gender-specific childhood clothing and/or toys.
  • Competency 2: Evaluate the basic tools of sociological inquiry.
    • Evaluate the validity and helpfulness of gender socialization sources.
    • Summarize gender socialization sources.
  • Competency 5: Evaluate the impact of social change on society and social institutions.
    • State and defend a personal approach to ethical decision-making.
    • State and defend a position on a contemporary ethical issue.
  • Competency 6: Demonstrate written and verbal communication skills for effectively presenting sociological concepts, ideas, and analyses.
    • Write in a professional style using APA 6th edition referencing and format with correct grammar, usage, and mechanics.

The purpose of this assignment is twofold:

  • It will help you to start thinking about the impact of socialization on your life as a starting point for your final project.
  • It requires you to locate and evaluate resources on socialization that may be used in your final paper.

Socialization, the lifelong social experience through which we learn culture, is vital to becoming members of a society. One type of socialization that occurs at a very early age involves gender roles. For this assignment you will analyze how gender is created by society, specifically looking at children’s toys and/or clothing.

From birth, parents act toward children on the basis of the child’s sex. Children’s clothing and toys reflect their parents gender expectations. For this assignment, complete the following:

  • Thinking back on your childhood, were your toys and/or clothing gender-specific? Identify the clothing and/or toys you had and how they reflect gender expectations.
  • Describe what messages your toys and/or clothing sent about gender and on yourself.
  • How do these messages reflect larger societal expectations?
  • Analyze gender-specific messages that arise from childhood clothing and/or toys.
  • What impact do you think these messages had on you? In doing so, be sure to utilize concepts introduced in this section as well as course readings on socialization.
  • Your analysis should also include information from two additional outside resources regarding gender socialization—one from a popular source and one from a scholarly source. A critical component of this assignment involves evaluating these outside resources.
    • Provide a summary of the outside articles (one scholarly and one popular) and how they will be helpful in your final project. Evaluate the information you receive from these sources—both in terms of validity and helpfulness—using specific course materials from Unit 2. For example, how can each source be evaluated in terms of accuracy, objectivity, audience, and content? What conclusions can you draw about these sources?
  • Use APA format for citations, references, and general paper formatting. Your writing should use correct grammar and mechanics.
  • Your paper should be at least three pages in length, excluding the cover page and the references page.
