Your group has been hired by an advertising firm that is developing a series of commercials for family-oriented products geared toward the entire family. They want to develop a series of commercials that will target family members at various life stages. Your group needs to thoroughly describe Erikson’s theory of Psychosocial development. In your description of each stage, identify and analyze a television, movie, or literary character for each stage of the theory. Discuss how that character typifies the stage and how the character is resolving the conflict. The marketing firm will use this information as they develop commercials targeting each developmental stage. Finally, provide a review of three recent studies relating to EriksonÂ’s theory of development from the list below.

The advertising firm has requested that you submit a 4 to 5 page report summarizing your research in this area. Therefore, your group should submit one combined Word document that conforms to the following directions:

· Give a description of Erikson’s theory, including the stages of development using the criteria listed above.

· Identify a character at each stage.

· Choose three of the following studies found in the Library article search engine Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection.

· For each one you choose, describe the study and discuss how it supports or does not support the information you have written in your report about Erikson. Specifically:

o Which particular aspects of the theory does the study examine?

o Do the experimental or discussion results strengthen or weaken the theory and you ideas? Why?

o Do you agree or disagree with the conclusions? Why or why not?

Bolton had a 3.4 college GPA and three years of teaching experience whereas George Lopez, the minority applicant, had only a 3.2 GPA and two years of teaching experience. Should the personnel director be worried? Why or why not?

The personnel director at East High School thinks she is in big trouble. Ten years ago, 30% of the residents in the county were Hispanic yet only 5% of the
school employees were Hispanic. To remedy this situation, the school system developed an affirmative action program in which at least 40% of all new hires were
to be Hispanic. The program had been working well because today 25% of all school employees are Hispanic compared to 28% in the qualified work force.

Last week, however, a white employee who wasn’t hired for a teaching job filed a lawsuit challenging the legality of the affirmative action plan. Tory Bolton
claimed that he was more qualified than the minority applicant who received the job. Bolton had a 3.4 college GPA and three years of teaching experience
whereas George Lopez, the minority applicant, had only a 3.2 GPA and two years of teaching experience. Should the personnel director be worried? Why or why
not?

Descartes says we are not “in” our bodies simply in the way a sailor is “in” a ship he/she is sailing. Summarize and critically evaluate the reasoning that leads him to say this.

DESCARTES and HUME
Value: 40%

Instructions: Write an essay of approximately 2000 words on one of the following topics:

1. Compare and contrast Hume and Descartes on the role and significance of skepticism for philosophy as it is employed and discussed in the Meditations and the Enquiry. Is one position/approach superior to the other? Give reasons why or why not.

2. David Hume offers both “sceptical doubts concerning the understanding” and a “sceptical solution” to those doubts. Summarize and critically evaluate Hume’s reasoning/position in either, or both, of these enterprises.

3. Compare and contrast Descartes and Hume on the source, nature and avoidability of human error. Then, critically evaluate both positions.
.
4. Summarize and critically evaluate Hume’s discussion of miracles. (Note: There will also be a similar question on the final exam. If you choose to write your essay on this topic you will be disqualified from answering that question on the final exam.)

5. Descartes says we are not “in” our bodies simply in the way a sailor is “in” a ship he/she is sailing. Summarize and critically evaluate the reasoning that leads him to say this.

6. A topic of your own choosing provided it is cleared in advance with the instructor.

The Philosophical Essay: There are many different ways one can write a philosophical essay. It is always important, however, to make it clear to the reader (and to yourself) when one is summarizing a view or position and when one is critically evaluating a position. Both elements are needed in a good essay. The amount of space dedicated to critical evaluation should never be less than 25%, and rarely more than 60% (depending upon how complex the summary is).
This is not a research essay. Feel free to use outside or secondary sources, though you need not. But make sure they are fully cited when relied upon, including author, title, date, and page (for internet sources, I need the URL down to the page).
