Discuss the importance of the separation of duties for personnel.

Discuss the importance of the separation of duties for personnel. For example, with good separation of duties in place within the organization, one employee cannot abuse a policy–it takes at least two to do it. Good policy keeps everyone honest.

As part of your discussion, name examples of roles you would separate and why. For example, an administrator has full administrative server login access, and a network technician has limited administrative access but can view system login details. Payroll has access to employee financial records, but only payroll managers can approve raises. What are other examples?

If possible use examples from your organization, security experience, or a researched example. This way we can learn from real-life examples.

Write a communications plan not to exceed 1,050 words to support the strategy of American Plastics.

American  Plastics had fared rather worse than its competitors during the  economic downturn. With revenue, quality, and productivity down,  management set several goals to reverse the company’s fortune. One area  in need of improvement was human resources and “Janet,” the newly  appointed HR Director faced a daunting challenge: to quickly re-invent  the Human Resources function, reposition it a strategic partner to the  business, and improve employee perceptions of her department. Her  predecessor retired after leading a major reduction in force causing a  significant exodus of key talent, some unexpected. Janet was charged  with finding a way to retain top talent and develop a steady but  highly-qualified stream of candidates to fill regular as well as  critical positions.  The CEO agreed with her that differentiating the  human resources function was essential for the company’s strategic plan  to succeed.
In her first two weeks on the job Janet discovered:

Job descriptions were inconsistent, long but vague lists of high level “duties and responsibilities” and qualifications
Job titles didn’t reflect the work people did, used instead as a  framework for budgeting and compensation as many were doing unique work  requiring different knowledge and skills.
Aside from providing a coordinating function, human resources had  outsourced recruiting to third parties who presented candidates based on  their internet postings and other sources. No matter the level or  criticality of the open position, human resources rarely conducted  interviews or assessments before or after handing over the third party  resumes to the hiring organization and would get involved again only  when a candidate was selected.
HR’s participation in the onboarding process of new employees was  limited to having them attend a half-day orientation session where,  between a video and a slide presentation about the company, they filled  out benefits-related, payroll, ID and other paper forms.
Training and Development (T&D) had largely been outsourced to several companies that provided generic on-line courses.
The recent departure of several mission-critical employees disclosed  no systematic means of capturing expertise from employees; when they  left, their knowledge left with them.
The Performance Employee Evaluation Program didn’t align with  anything, was viewed by managers and individual contributors alike as a  burdensome annual chore that interfered with people’s “real jobs.”

The management of talent is one of a handful of strategic services  human resources can offer. The decline of traditional HR functions  through automation, self-service, and outsourcing demands a “culture  change” within human resources: adopt a business focus by an  organization still structured largely around benefits administration,  time and attendance reporting, labor cost processing, and similar  transactional operations.

Explain your interpretation of what the problem really is about and what the consequences are if the problem is not solved (i.e., do you understand the problem?).

Research George Polya’s problem-solving principles and techniques from the AIU Library or on the Internet.

Although the scenarios below are not specific mathematical situations, they will require application of Polya’s principles to obtain a reasonable solution.

Choose 1 of the following scenarios:

You are on your way to a very important doctor’s appointment and just barely have enough time to get to the appointment. You know that if you do not get to the appointment on time, it will cost you $200 and you will not be able to get another appointment for weeks. In your haste, going through your front door, you accidentally tear a big hole in your dress or pants. What do you do now?
A recipe for a sheet cake that serves 54 people is:
• ½ cup butter
• ¼ cup oil
• 3 cups of baking flour
• 1 tablespoon baking powder
• 6 eggs
• 1 cup milk
• 2 cups sugar
• ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

After everything is mixed into a cake batter, you are supposed to pour it into a floured 12 in. by 18 in. by 1 in. sheet cake pan. However, all you have is a 9 in. by 14 in. by 1 in. pan, an 8 in. square pan 1 in. deep, and two 8 in. diameter round pans 1 in. deep. Your 46 guests will be arriving shortly, so you do not have time to go to the store to get the correct-sized pan. How will you have enough cake for each guest to have a piece without wasting too much batter?

It is after midnight, and your kitchen sink cold-water supply has sprung a leak. You know you will not be able to get a plumber to fix the sink for several hours. You do not know where the water turn-off is, and you do not have any plumbing experience. What will you do to minimize the damage?

Follow Polya’s principles to solve your problem.
o Explain your interpretation of what the problem really is about and what the consequences are if the problem is not solved (i.e., do you understand the problem?).
o Develop and write down a strategy for solving this problem. What do you need to know or do to solve this problem?
o Use your strategy to attempt to solve your chosen problem; show the steps in the correct order for your attempted solution.
o Did your strategy actually solve the problem? How do you know?
o Suppose that your solution did not solve the problem. What would be your next action?

Discuss the impact ethics plays in policing. Is proper ethical training important, why or why not?

This week’s reading provides overview of the police in American society. After reviewing the reading for week 6, as well as the week 6  lesson for this week; discuss/debate with your classmates the ideologies associated with utilitarianism and deontological ethics concerning human behavior and the ethical or unethical decisions and/or actions of those working in law enforcement. In doing so, differentiate the distinction between crime and torts committed by police officers i.e., strict liability tort, intentional tort, and negligence tort, as well as the elements associated with federal liability concerning a law suit under 42 U.S.C. Section 1983, as the cornerstone of police civil liability at the federal level. Discuss the impact ethics plays in policing. Is proper ethical training important, why or why not? Lastly, discuss what can police leaders do to instill organizational ethics? This essay must have at least two references.
