Application: Evidence-Based Practice Interventions

Application: Evidence-Based Practice Interventions

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) includes a variety of approaches and therapeutic systems, the most well known of which include cognitive therapy, behavior therapy, rational emotive behavior therapy, and multimodal therapy. Multimodal therapy is a type of CBT that is based on the idea that humans are biological beings who think, feel, act, sense, imagine, and interact. Each of those “modalities” should be addressed in psychological treatment. The multimodal therapy acronym “BASIC I D” signifies behavior, affect, sensation, imagery, cognition, interpersonal relationships, and drugs/biology and is the basis for treatment. Various types of cognitive behavior therapies such as Trauma-Focused CBT are valuable when working with child and adolescent disaster survivors. Relaxation training is a cognitive behavioral adjunct that is helpful for anxiety reduction.
Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) is time-limited and employs homework, structured interviews, and assessment tools. It focuses on the interpersonal context (rather than intrapsychic) and on building interpersonal skills. IPT may change the client’s interpersonal behavior by promoting adjustment to current interpersonal roles and conditions. Similar to other counseling and psychotherapy, crisis interventions include assessment that is ongoing throughout the intervention process. The dissimilarities of crisis interventions, however, include the persistent emphasis on problem-solving techniques as well as safety assessment.

To prepare for this assignment:

Review Chapter 7 in your course text, Crisis Intervention Strategies, and think about the potential scope of impact a crisis may have on people suffering from PTSD.

Review the types of responses to trauma, including but not limited to responses to PTSD.

Review this week’s media, During a Crisis-Counselor Interventions and Strategies, paying particular attention to Dr. Berger’s presentation on differences between military and civilian trauma reactions.

Review the article, “Responsive Therapy and Motivational Interviewing: Postmodernist Paradigms,” and consider the benefits of motivational interviewing.

Review the article, “Best Practices for Counselors Who Treat Posttraumatic Stress Disorder,” and think about ways these best practices could fit into the implementation of CBT and IPT.

Review the article, “The Treatment and Prevention of Depression: Implications for Counseling and Counselor Training,” and consider how you might teach this information to make it useful for counselor educators and in crisis training.

Review the article, “Psychosocial and Moral Development of PTSD-Diagnosed Combat Veterans,” and think about whether this information transfers to civilian populations too.

Review the literature to support CBT and IPT techniques for use with survivors of crises suffering from such illnesses as PTSD, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and substance abuse.

The assignment: (4 page paper )
Briefly describe two CBT and two IPT evidenced-based practice strategies that may be applied to working with crisis survivors.
Then explain how these strategies might be changed if the crisis survivor was diagnosed with PTSD prior to the current trauma.
Finally, provide a brief analysis of how your intervention strategies for persons with PTSD might differ if you were working with military personnel rather than civilians. Give specific examples.

Support your Application Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are required to provide a reference list and to appropriately cite, APA style, all references used within your assignment.

Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress: Resources for Recovery

Discuss whether or not you believe the research methodology used in the study is the one (1) method that provides researchers with the most information in general.

In this assignment, you will write an essay about the research methods and ethical implications of a social psychology study. You will get information about the study from one of the entries in the SPARQ “Solutions Catalog”, which is a web site maintained by Stanford University at https://sparq.stanford.edu/solutions?&&. SPARQ is an acronym for “Social Psychological Answers to Real-world Questions.” Each entry in the Solutions Catalog names a problem, and then offers a solution to that problem, based on a research study in social psychology.
To keep this assignment short and manageable, your only sources for this assignment should be from the SPARQ site and your course materials, such as your textbook. There is no need for you to cite any of the course materials. Therefore, no additional citations or references are needed, beyond those from the SPARQ site.
In this exercise, you will choose one of the entries in the SPARC site, and then write a two to three (2-3) page paper that meets the following requirements.

Begin your paper with a short introductory statement that clearly identifies the article from the SPARQ site that you are using, as well as the corresponding research article.  Model your statement after the following example:

The article I selected from the SPARQ website is entitled “Boost Grades by Reframing Failures” (Wilson, n.d.), which summarizes a research article (Wilson & Linville, 1982) on the topic.

Please note that there are two APA “in-text citations” in this example. The first citation “(Wilson, n.d.)” is an in-text citation for the SPARQ article. The SPARQ articles are undated, which means that there is no date of publication reported. The “n.d.” designation is an abbreviation for “no date”.
The second citation “(Wilson & Linville, 1982)”, is an in-text citation to the original research article. We are asking you to cite this paper for practice in using APA, but are not requiring you to read the original paper. Normally, you should cite only those articles that you actually read and used, but we’re making an exception here for the purposes of practice.

Briefly summarize the main details of your chosen social psychology research study. Identify the main research method(s) used in the study (e.g., case study, experiment, observation, etc.).
Explain whether or not you believe the research methodology that the researchers used in the study was the most appropriate for the study. Provide a rationale for your response.
Discuss whether or not you believe the research methodology used in the study is the one (1) method that provides researchers with the most information in general. Explain the main reasons why or why not.
Explain the major ethical implications of the selected study (e.g., informed consent, debriefing, etc.). Describe the main reasons why you believe the study was or was not ethical. Provide a rationale for your response.
The final section of your paper will be a reference section that contains a corresponding reference for both of the in-text citations in your introductory statement (see point #1, above). In APA-style citations, in-text citations must match up with a reference in the reference section. You can model your reference section after the following:

Wilson, T. D. (n.d.). Boost grades by reframing failures.  Retrieved from https://sparq.stanford.edu/solutions/boost-grades-reframing-failures
Wilson, T. D. & Linville, P.W. (1982).  Improving the academic performance of college freshmen:  attribution therapy revisited.  Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 42 (2), 367-376.

These examples follow the APA conventions for an Internet article, and a professional journal article, respectively.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

Describe research methods that are used for studying social psychology.
Develop an increased understanding of the dynamic between society and individuals.
Use technology and information resources to research issues in social psychology.
Write clearly and concisely about social psychology using proper grammar and mechanics.

Analyze and modify compensation and benefits policies to establish competitive programs and ensure compliance with legal requirements.

Determining the Proper Job Classification Introduction Assume
you are an HR Consultant that has been hired to help Comfort
Assisted Living with a recent grievance that was filed by one of
its employees. You will not be working on the legal aspects of the
case, but you will help the company determine if the employee’s job
classification is correct. Comfort Assisted Living has an HR
Department but would like to obtain an outside opinion. The
employee, Gregory Williams, is currently working as a Senior HR
Specialist for Comfort Assisted Living. His current job duties are
provided in the Supplemental Information document posted in our
classroom. Mr. Williams has been in the position for 5 years and
had consistently received “outstanding” ratings on his performance
evaluations until this year when he received a “meets expectations”
rating. A month ago, he saw a job announcement that Comfort
Assisted Living placed on Monster.com for a Deputy VP of HR. Mr.
Williams was angered by the job announcement because he felt he was
already performing the duties stated in the announcement. When he
asked his supervisor about the job, he was told that the Deputy
position was a new one that was being created and that he would
have to apply for the job just like everyone else. Mr. Williams
disagreed and felt his current position should be reclassified to
that of a Deputy VP of HR. He has filed a grievance with Comfort
Assisted Living and you have been hired to determine if Mr.
William’s current job is equivalent to the new Deputy position. You
have been told upfront that it has been years since the company
conducted a job analysis for its HR positions so you might have to
begin there before making your determination. Also, you have heard
from employees that work with Mr. Williams that he has been
slacking on the job lately. According to them, he routinely comes
in late, takes extra long lunches, and does not submit all of his
work on time. At least one of his coworkers said Mr. Williams was
having health issues and that he might have to undergo
chemotherapy. Another coworker said the health issues weren’t with
Mr. Williams, they were with his young daughter, who has a
mysterious illness that doctors are having difficulty diagnosing.
You’ve checked his leave records and nothing is on file regarding
an FMLA request and there is no documentation regarding possible
medical issues. In completing this assignment, you will showcase
that you can conduct a job analysis and use the results to develop
a job description, which will help address organizational
needs/concerns. You will also demonstrate that you have an
understanding of the ethical issues involved with job analyses, job
evaluation, and job design. Additionally, you will show that you
understand the HR context and have mastery of the fundamental
student competencies identified by UMUC’s Graduate School
including: communication and critical thinking. Steps to Completion
Review the information in the Supplemental Information file and
relevant course material regarding the nature of a job analysis and
its relationship to job descriptions and job classifications.
Determine what additional information you will need in order to
determine if Mr. Williams is justified in his claim. Decide which
of the four most commonly used methods of job analysis
(observation, interviews, questionnaires, functional) you will use
and be prepared to defend your choice. Determine how you will
overcome some of the most common problems in performing a job
analysis. Our course material discusses several of them. Review and
understand the key ethical considerations when conducting a job
analysis and designing a job description. Conduct an internet
search to find job typical job descriptions for Senior HR
Specialists. Compare and contrast the components in those
descriptions with the information given regarding Mr. Williams’s
current job duties
