Radiology Simulation
Abstract:
This project will involve the tailoring of a Radiology Department at a Barnes Jewish Hospital. Using Arena Simulation Software a model will be built to allow the detection of key areas of the system to show what procedures need to be established for lower patient wait times.
Problem Definition:
The main idea of this project is the scheduling of physicians to ensure that they develop a standard operating procedure with the radiation plans. Concurrent with this task will be the standardization of our system to ensure that this practice will continue to function consistently throughout all aspects of the organization.
Proof of Need:
Changing the scheduling structure is essential for radiation therapy treatment to limit the occurrence of misadministration. First, minor errors in timing and scheduling can result in a fatality for a patient that experiences slight errors in radiation oncology. Radiation treatment is an excellent method to kill cancerous cells that are affecting the body. Unfortunately, radiation destroys healthy tissue as well. Thus, every step must be taken to limit the effects that radiation can have on normal cells that are located in the vicinity of infected cells. A general schedule will make sure that physicians, nurses, and technicians are properly rested before engaging in critical surgical procedures. A very slight anatomical miss in a vital organ or around blood vessels can mean the difference between a successful operation and losing a patient in surgery. Thus the detail inherent to this type of surgery means being off by a few millimeters is essentially a complete miss. Likewise, and overdose in radiation can result in damage to healthy tissue that can also result in a fatality. An underdose could result in not enough cancerous cells being destroyed to prevent future spread of the mutated cells.
