Part One Issue Analysis (15 marks)

Read your selected chapter and conduct an issue analysis as in Part One of Assignment One. Make sure that you identify the determinants of health that are at issue. Draw a diagram of the elements that characterize an issue that you would like to explore further.

Part Two – Environmental Scan (50 marks)

Complete an environmental scan on the same issue. Follow the instructions below:

Using online and library resources complete an environmental scan to determine the extent of the health issue you identified in Part One.
(NOTE: While in the real world you might also include interviews with experts and the public, this is NOT required for this assignment.)

  1. INFORMAL SCAN of popular media (30 marks)
  1. Briefly state the issue that you are interests you.
  2. Start with a search using Google or another search engine to identify media reports on the issue.

Note the keywords in your searches that were effective.

  1. Decide which reports are relevant, authoritative, informative, and current.

Make an annotated table of 5–10 sources (with URLs) which you found useful.

  1. Write two paragraphs (200–500 words) to summarize your findings.

How much attention is the issue getting from politicians or advocacy organizations?

How has your understanding of the issue changed?

  1. FORMAL SCAN of authoritative sources (30 marks)
  1. Determine and identify the authoritative sources for your search (academic journals, government publications, public advocacy groups, think tanks, reports, other experts).
  2. Search sites such as the TRU library, Google Scholar, Health Canada, provincial and municipal health authorities and make an annotated table of 5–10 reports or articles (& URLs) you found useful.
  3. Write two paragraphs (200–500 words) to summarize your findings.

When completed Part Two of your analysis should be 3 –4 pages in length, plus the table containing annotated results.

Directions:
You have been hired as a consultant for Best Care Hospital to improve the quality and increase patient satisfaction using innovation and information systems. Best Care Hospital has already invested $12M in the implementation of a new electronic health record but this has not improved customer satisfaction. Your job is to do an analysis of the patient experience and identify where there are opportunities for improvements by evaluating the current state of the patient portal, patient wait-time analysis, customer satisfaction results, cost transparency, and the electronic transition of care between settings.
