This week’s assignment is going to focus on imitation and understanding writing voice.

Report Issue

This week’s assignment is going to focus on imitation and understanding writing voice. This will be done in three parts. The first part of this assignment will be to complete the scaffolding exercise outlined in the textbook (p. 56). You will select a poem (this can be of your choosing or one of the poems in the book) and scaffold it in a similar fashion to the scaffold in the text (Note: Poem must be at least 15 lines long) using your own word choices.

The second part of this assignment will be to work on imitating the voice of prose. Select either Scarpa’s “I Go Back to Berryman’s” (p. 65) or Painter’s “The New Year” (p .69) and reread it. Then, using that piece as a template, attempt to write your own story while trying to capture the voice of the author. Think about the choices that the author is making while you do this (you should do this for about 10-15 minutes, but at least make sure it is a page long).

The third part of this assignment will be to provide a reflection for the two first parts. Think about the two different exercises. What did you learn? How did it feel to try and capture the different voices of these writers? Why do you feel the authors made the choices that they did? What prompted you to make the choices that you’ve done here? Were you surprised by anything? What have you learned about your own voice? What authors have inspired you and whose voices you’d like to imitate?

Create a 7–9-page leadership analysis using the narrative and summary of the leadership interviews you conducted.

Create a 7–9-page leadership analysis using the narrative and summary of the leadership interviews you conducted.

This assessment gives you the opportunity to synthesize and demonstrate your understanding and experience interviewing leaders and how the leadership characteristics you analyzed relate to leadership theories, the New Business Realities, and the Thinking Habits.

This is the last assessment that is related to your leadership interviews. For this assessment, use the narrative and summary of your interviews to complete the following analysis:

  1. Leadership theory: Summarize the leadership theory that you used to develop your interview questions. Analyze how the questions you asked and the data you collected during the interview support your chosen leadership theory. You might have used servant leadership, Kevin Cashman, Margaret Wheatley, articles from the Center for Creative Leadership, leadership stage theory, or other sources. Demonstrate your understanding of your chosen mastery (personal, purpose, change, interpersonal/being, balance, or action). Use examples from your interviews to demonstrate your mastery topic.
  2. Common Learning Themes: Reread the New Business Realities and the Thinking Habits of Mind, Heart, and Imagination, linked in the Resources. Select one topic from each and discuss its relevance to your experience interviewing leaders. The following are two examples:
    • New Business Realities: Did the interview reflect the dynamics of transformational change in complex systems in the change mastery questions?
    • Thinking Habits: Did the interview encourage professional self-development through conversational reflection in the questions on personal mastery?
  3. Self-Reflection: Self-assess your experience as an interviewer. What seemed to work? What did not work? What would you do differently next time? How would you change your explanation of your leadership topic, the medium you chose, or your behavior during the interview, to enhance the quality of your data? What did you learn about interviewing? What did you learn about your topic and its potential for helping leaders examine their leadership skills and characteristics?
  4. Summary Statement: Think about your experience interviewing leaders at this level. Describe the primary lessons you gained from this experience, the value of interviewing leaders, and the impact this approach has on leadership development. Include your recommendations to your current organization or an organization with which you are familiar about the development of leaders at this level and on your mastery topic and the use of interviews to propel personal development.

Additional Requirements

  • Length: Your assessment should be 7–9 pages, double-spaced.
  • Font and size: Use a standard font—either Times New Roman or Arial. The font size must be 12 point.
  • Margins: The paper margins should be 1 inch on each side.
  • Components: Include a title page, table of contents, and reference page. These do not count toward the paper length.
  • Formatting: APA format is required for all aspects of your analysis, including citations and references. Your writing should be well organized and clear. Writing structure, spelling, and grammar should be correct as well.

Scenario

Solar Co. Inc., a solar panel manufacturing and installation company, has recently encountered a series of scandals and bad publicity relating to defective solar panels, poor workmanship, and employee allegations of harassment by executives within the company. One claim resulted in a two-year trial which Solar Co. lost; all other claims were settled out of court.

Solar Co. enters into a contract with XYZ Media to prepare a 6-month national advertising and public relations campaign to help restore its tarnished reputation at a cost of $600,000. XYZ Media launches the campaign, and it is successful for the first two months until XYZ’s computer servers are hacked and all client information is lost because XYZ failed to have adequate backup systems in place. In addition, social media account information and passwords were compromised, resulting in derogatory and inappropriate posts being made on all of XYZ’s social media accounts for several hours. Because XYZ was managing Solar Co.’s social media presence at the time, Solar Co.’s social media accounts were also taken over by the hackers for a brief time and filled with damaging posts.

XYZ issues a public apology; however, Solar Co. wishes to terminate the contract with XYZ and receive a refund of the $200,000 it paid for the first two months of the campaign due to the damages caused by the computer hack. XYZ refuses to cancel the contract or issue a refund, insisting that it can successfully continue the campaign and re-create all of the material that was lost. Solar Co. refuses to pay any further amounts due under the contract and has already begun seeking a new media relations firm to re-launch the campaign.

Part I

Write a 525- to 700-word recommendation to Solar Co.’s CEO advising whether Solar Co. should:

  • file a lawsuit and proceed to trial
  • try to reach a settlement with XYZ Media, or
  • use a method of alternative dispute resolution (ADR)

Your analysis should specifically discuss each of the nine factors provided in the “Contemporary Environment Cost-Benefit Analysis of a Lawsuit” feature found in Ch. 4, “Judicial, Alternative, and E-Dispute Resolution.” Provide a clear explanation and reasoning for your recommendation based on the facts of the scenario.

Would your recommendation be different if you were advising XYZ Media’s CEO? If so, how?

Part II

Solar Co. intends to use arbitration agreements with all clients, subcontractors and employees in the future.

Write a 350- to 525-word memo to Solar Co.’s CEO explaining the arbitration procedure and the enforceability of arbitration provisions under the Federal Arbitration Act.

Include a recommendation as to whether arbitration agreements should be used in the future to reduce Solar Co.’s legal risk and why.
