By now you have hopefully visited your field sites at least once and have begun to look into sources for background historical research. Here are some suggestions for what you should be working on during this module.
• Continue making worthwhile visits to your field sites.
◦ Jot down observation notes in your notebook (the more you have the easier your paper will be to write).
◦ Take photos and/or collect other graphic representations that will be good for your paper,
• During this time you could also be visiting a library and finding a good book or two related to the history of the area you are studying. There are probably many fascinating stories related to the places or people you are researching that you can learn about and share! You can use the Internet as well, but you must use valid sites (no Wikipedia or amateur/opinionated blogs).
• Creating an outline is highly recommended as it really does give structure and guidance while you put everything together and create a coherent product.
• Keep in mind the paper will be structured around addressing the three provided guiding questions that ask you to focus on symbolic interaction, social psychology, and how relevant historical events or ideas relate to current observations:
•
1 How do symbols affect social behavior and interaction?
2 How do factors such as culture, lifestyle, age, education, occupation, mode of travel, or location affect how people imagine the city differently?
3 How do events from the past connect to current phenomena in these neighborhoods?
• You don’t have to worry about interviewing people this time around (though you can if you like, of course).
• Similar to the Midterm Project, your selected key terms from the word bank must be in bold print and explained clearly (using unique definitions that demonstrate clear understanding) to an imagined reader who has no understanding of sociological terms. These terms need to be relevant to your observations and should be integrated throughout the paper and not bunched up in the first paragraph or so. Definitions should be either in footnotes, text boxes or endnotes.

RESEARCH PAPER INSTRUCTIONS
Research a specific mental disorder within the realm of Abnormal Psychology. The topic must be one which is discussed in the Comer text and described in the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The length of the body of the paper must be at least 7 pages, and must not exceed 10 pages of summarized research findings in current APA format. In addition to this, include a current APA-style title page, abstract, and references; these do not count toward the minimum number of pages required. The paper must be organized with sub-headings reflecting the required sections (IIX).
The research paper will address the following aspects, organized in this order:
*Title Page: APA-style
*Abstract: APA-style
I.Introduction: Introduce and describe the topic. Discuss the DSM classification for the disorder, including a discussion of the specific criteria as described in the DSM (1/2 page).
II.Historical: The disorder in its historical context (1 page).
III.Cause of the Illness: Current research as to the cause of the illness (1 page).
IV.Treatment: Various treatment approaches for this disorder, including the benefits of the treatment (1 page).
V.Prevention: Research as to the prevention of the illness (1 page).
VI.Cross Cultural: Cross-cultural issues pertaining to the topic (1 page).
VII.Biblical Worldview: Discuss the topic from a Christian worldview perspective, including disorders cause, treatment, and prevention. Utilize the Bible and a book or journal source written from a biblical/theological perspective on the topic (1 page).
VIII.Conclusion: Include a closing summary of the research, including ideas for future research on the topic (1/2 page).
IX.References: APA-style
*Organize paper according to directions. Include current APA-style Level 1 sub-titles.
*Use the references you found for your References Assignment.
*The use of 3RD person point of view is expected for this type of scholarly research assignment.
*Correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation is expected in writing at this level.
*Include not more than page of directly quoted material. Directly quoted material in excess of page would not count towards length/content requirements of the paper.
* Current APA formatting is required.
Include five (5) or more references that stem from scholarly journal articles or books dated within the past 10 years.
Include one (1) or more references that stem from a theological and/or biblical perspective.
The Bible should not be listed on this reference page (even though the final paper may include citations from the Bible, it should not be included in this assignment).
