A Simple Case of Mania? A highly successful businessman, age 45, with no previous history of psychiatric disorder, began to act differently from his usual self. He seemed driven at work. His working hours gradually increased until finally he was sleeping only 2 to 3 hours a night; the rest of the time he worked. He became irritable and began to engage in uncharacteristic sprees of spending beyond his means.

Although he felt extremely productive and claimed he was doing the work of five men, the man’s boss felt otherwise. He was worried about the quality of that work, having observed several recent examples of poor business decisions. Finally, when the man complained of headaches, his boss insisted that he seek help. Source: Adapted from Jamieson & Wells,  1979 .

The case you have just read concerns a man who, on first glance, looks as if he might be having an episode of mania. In fact, he is suffering from four tumorous masses in his brain. Clues that this man has a brain disorder rather than a mood disorder include the facts that he is experiencing headaches at the same time as a major change in behavior and that he has no prior history of psychopathology (see Taylor, 2000 ). Clinicians always need to be alert to the possibility that brain impairment itself may be directly responsible for their patients’ symptoms. Failure to do so could result in serious diagnostic errors, as when a clinician falsely attributes a mood change to psychological causes and fails to consider a neuropsychological origin such as a brain tumor.

Describe the pharmacokinetics of the medication using the acronym ADME to describe the process

Family Therapy Course

Please put the question or section name above each slide

For this assignment, you will select a psychotropic medication from the classification of antipsychotics of aripiprazole (Abilify)

Create a PowerPoint where you will discuss the use of the medication in the management of mental health in relation to your selected diagnosis.

Include the following information:

· Provide the DSM-5 diagnosis and the ICD-10-CM code. For example, Cyclothymic disorder (F34.0).

· List the drug class, generic, trade name, and selective action on neurotransmitters.

· Explore the common side effects and any contraindications.

· Describe the pharmacokinetics of the medication using the acronym ADME to describe the process. ADME stands for:

· Absorption (how the drug gets into the bloodstream)

· Distribution (how the drug reaches the brain)

· Metabolism (how the drug is broken down)

· Excretion (how the drug leaves the body)

· Discuss stigma, dependency, and other relevant considerations for this type of drug and client population.

· Explore how a therapist will communicate with medical professionals for the initial referral and to address side effects.

· Discuss a therapists role in educating clients on the use of this particular medication.

· Include information about complementary, alternative, and holistic treatment medicine. Make note of how these may react with other ongoing medications and symptoms.

Support your presentation with at least three scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources may be included.

Length: 10 slides (with a separate reference slide)

What negative consequences could result if parents followed Bem’s suggestion to raise androgynous boys and girls?

Guidelines for Writing DISCUSSION QUESTIONS (Adapted from Bucker, 2015)

General Information
Throughout the semester, you will be asked to read a series of scholarly articles and chapters (posted in Canvas) that focus on topics pertinent to your major research project. This handout describes your Discussion Question assignment for each of these assigned readings.

· There are four discussion sessions during the semester. You will write two discussion questions per session. If there is one assigned reading per session, then both of your DQs will come from this reading. If there are two assigned readings per session, then you should write one DQ per reading.

· On February 8, there are two discussion sessions. This means that you write 4 DQs total for this class period, 2 for each discussion session.

· Questions must be submitted to Canvas by class time on the day that the relevant articles/chapters are to be discussed. If you have to miss class on the day of the discussion, you can submit your DQs before class and receive partial credit for the assignment.

· As you read each article/chapter, take notes. Underline important points and jot down ideas or questions that come to mind while reading it; this will help you write discussion questions more easily.

· Discussion questions should neither be too specific (“What does the fourth word on p. 27 mean?”) nor too general (“Was this a good article? Why or why not?”). Try to strike a balance between the specific and general. Try to ask thought-provoking questions that make connections to other areas of study and other realms of life—what you saw on the news, read in the paper or a magazine, etc.

· Be sure to point the reader to the specific content of the article that your question addresses.

· Avoid questions with “yes/no” or “either/or” answers; good discussion questions are open-ended. Also avoid leading questions. See below for examples of good discussion questions.

· Go for controversy! Try to pose questions that would easily engage the class in discussion.

· When it is your turn to lead class discussion during one of the sessions, you must still turn in typed discussion questions on the sources, but these may be the same questions you used to stimulate class discussion during your presentation. Remember that you do the discussion leading in groups, so be sure that you turn in two discussion questions per discussion leader.

Example Discussion Questions

1. What negative consequences could result if parents followed Bem’s suggestion to raise androgynous boys and girls? How might peers respond to boys with stereotypically feminine characteristics and girls with stereotypically masculine characteristics? What are the positive consequences of raising androgynous boys and girls? Where does one draw the line between a healthy de-emphasis on gender and a healthy acknowledgment of gender in raising children?

2. Josephs, Markus, and Tafarodi argue that individuation (distinguishing the self from others on the basis of talents or accomplishments) does not serve as a significant source of esteem for American women (because of gender-role socialization). How accurately does their argument describe women in the U.S.? Explain your response. How do women in the U.S. compare, in terms of how individualistic they are, to men and women in Asian cultures? How does the pressure that women feel in our society to be appropriately “feminine” interact with the individualistic norms that all Americans experience?

Explain how stereotypes, prejudice, and/or discrimination are impacted by media portrayals of women or men

To prepare for this discussion, please read Chapter 8 of your textbook. In addition, watch Jean Kilbourne: The dangerous ways ads see women (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and Tough Guise: Violence, media & the crisis in masculinity (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. You must also find one scholarly article to inform your thinking (see instructions below).  Finally, review Instructor Guidance and any relevant Announcements.  In this discussion, you will consider the influence of social factors on individual mental processes and behavior.  Be sure to use your own academic voice (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and apply in-text citations (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. appropriately throughout your post.

  • Watch Jean Kilbourne:  The Dangerous Ways Ads See Women (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.(Jean Kilbourne, 2014), which examines the portrayal of women in advertising and the resulting effects on feminine identity, and Tough Guise:  Violence, Media & the Crisis in Masculinity (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.(ChallengingMedia, 2006), which examines the portrayal of men in the media and the resulting effects on masculine identity.
  • Locate a scholarly article examining a relevant phenomenon in relation to media and gender (e.g., when considering women in advertising, self-esteem, objectification, body shame, or perceptions of attractiveness might be particularly relevant; when considering men in the media, aggression might be particularly relevant; for both, attitudes and gender roles are relevant themes).  See the recommended articles for this week for some options.
  • Focus on women or men for your discussion, depending on the relevant phenomenon you considered in your research above.  (You will address the opposite in your replies.).
  • Examine the implications of media portrayals of women or men, given the videos you watched and the article you read.  In your discussion, include the following:
    • Explain how stereotypes, prejudice, and/or discrimination are impacted by media portrayals of women or men.
    • Interpret  the implications:
      • How might the portrayal of gender impact behavior and/or mental processes? For example, does seeing scantily clad women or “macho” men have positive or negative effects on men? How does it affect women? Support your points with examples and/or credible evidence.
    • Relate additional phenomena in American culture that that may be especially relevant to a discussion of social attitudes regarding gender.
    • Give an example of an advertisement or media program (other than one presented in the required videos) that you believe might impact attitudes.   Explain the relevance and point out specific elements that illustrate.
  • Remember to use your own academic voice (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and apply in-text citations (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. appropriately throughout your post.

Post your initial response of 250 words or more
