consider how epidemiological data might influence the development of public health policies

Question description

Public health policy highlights needs and gaps in public health. Understanding policy development is a critical skill for epidemiologists. Policy is developed through a rigorous and dynamic process involving a balance between epidemiological data, strength of evidence, values, costs, ethics, and politics. Government agencies, organizations, politicians and policy makers, funding agencies, and public health professionals are all involved in the process.

Implementing public health policy is often formal and structured. Epidemiological data help stakeholders understand health issues and priorities. As policy is developed, stakeholders are involved in carrying out the process and allocating resources.

For this Discussion, review the week’s Learning Resources and consider how epidemiological data might influence the development of public health policies. Using the Walden Library or the Internet find an example of how epidemiological data has been used to develop a public health policy. Consider how the different stakeholders involved in the design and implementation of the example you selected used epidemiological data.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post an explanation of an initiative in which epidemiological data had been used to develop a policy. Describe the stakeholders that were involved in designing and implementing this policy. Then give three examples of how the epidemiological data was used in the design and implementation of the policy. Support your post using scholarly resources.

Public Health Leadership Theory

Question description

For this Project Assignment, you complete another part of your Public Health Leadership Theory based upon your understanding of leadership perspectives you have reviewed in this course. In addition, you must use a systems thinking approach in the development of your visual representation of your personal Public Health Leadership Theory. As you post your visual representation, you may find using a computer scanner helpful in scanning your image and attaching it to your post.

The Assignment (3–4 pages):

This week you will provide a visual representation of your public health leadership theory. It can be a table, schematic diagram, graph, or any other representation you choose. Please feel free to be creative. However, the focus MUST be on leadership. Be sure to provide a narrative explanation that shows how the developed theory can close the “gap” identified in the first part of the project. Additionally explain how it incorporates system thinking. Remember your theory can be based on those that we have learned about or your own. There is no wrong theory. What matters is the explanation of how it addresses the gap and uses system thinking. While this doesn’t have to be addressed now, keep in mind the last part of the project will involve presenting a methodology that tests the developed theory empirically. Let’s help one another with the project. Post your questions and thoughts in the “Contact the Instructor” area. Please feel free to weigh in on your colleagues comments.

Social Marketing

As stated in Chapter 1 of Social Marketing for Public Health Powerpoint, social marketing is “a process that applies marketing principles and techniques to create, communicate, and deliver value in order to influence target audience behaviors that benefit society as well as the target audience”. Social marketing has been the cause of countless improvements throughout society and public health throughout time. Specifically, it has helped with the reduction of AIDS, prevention of teen smoking, fights against child abuse, promotes physical exercise and so much more.

Social marketing is considered a “perfect fit” for public health because of its help with reducing/resolving pubic health issues, not only locally but nationally and even globally. One of the most valuable contributions made globally, in my opinion, would be the safe drinking water campaign in Madagascar. As we know, water is a necessity of life but unfortunately, there are people from around the world who do not have this luxury that we so often take advantage of. Those of the social marketing field have helped make safe drinking water more possible for those who do not have easy access to it.

While social marketers have helped tremendously in various aspects of the public health field, there are still some that need more assistance. Personally, I believe that homelessness is still an issue that needs more attention. It has ultimately become an epidemic for many people who all suffer from this problem because of various reasons such as fleeing from domestic abuse relationships or losing their home do to a natural disaster of some sort (Homelessness as a Public Health Law Issue: Selected Resources).

Global trends also play a role in social marketing for public health. Three noteworthy trends that I have noticed would be going global for public health, building partnerships, and integration of various communication formats and media. Each of these have helped shaped the public health field globally. Social marketing has made such a significant impact in the public health industry due through social media. Social media helps social marketers spread the word and awareness for whatever public health problem that they are trying to help solve/decrease/promote. Through social media, they are able to reach people all around the world, who in turn could help spread their ideas as well.
