It was described as ritual events that mark the transition of one’s status from one to the next.
i.e high school senior to high school graduate
Rites of separation (pre-liminal)
Rites of transition (liminal)
Rites of incorporation (post-liminal)
All rituals goes through these three phases, but not all three are equally emphasized

‘hwangap’ and many big gathering rituals taken place at the celebrant’s home are transitioning into secular rituals to suit the modern lifestyle (i.e. Chinese styled dinner instead of traditional Korean foods) in Korea.
Meanwhile, there is a revival of these big celebrations in America ( i.e. it functions as community gathering the Korean immigrants in a foreign land).
Traditions and celebrations are inevitably altered to suit the new environment (i.e. changes in the economy and society).

Dialectic tension, as Prof. T mentioned during lecture, heightens when individuals does not want to conform to traditions and pattern, while groups reject changes. Have you ever tried to break regularities and how does the group react to your action? (i.e. not having a birthday cake at a birthday celebration)
