Curriculum Planning Form

Once a research question has been developed and agreed upon in the mentoring process, it is time to make meaning of documentation and strategize for curriculum and teaching. The purpose of the assignment this week is to construct a tool to help the teacher see how alignment or connection of these three big areas is the key to positive child outcomes. This form can be used to guide the coaching process and should be flexible enough to be used in parts only, for short-term or for long-term goals, observation, and for learning experiences. The power of coaching is partnering with teachers where they are. This requires and assessment of their knowledge and experience and the developmentally appropriate addition of skills to their repertoire.

After reading chapter six refer to Appendix A (at the end of the chapter), create your own version of this form tailoring it for use at the program you currently work at or an early childhood program you would like to eventually work with (i.e. Head Start, state-funded childcare, infant program, home day care, etc.).  Make sure you capture all the elements of sections one, two, and three.

Additionally, create your own section (numbered four) that will be inspired by an outside source (i.e. program evaluation tool, instructional resource, etc.). See figure 6.1 for more ideas for your designed section

Curriculum Goals and Plans, Assessment, and Teaching Strategies

Coaches may want to use this form to document and guide their support of teachers in connecting curriculum goals, assessment, and teaching strategies. The form is too complex to give to a teacher to use alone. It may be used either with collaborative support to work through each section or as a tool for only the Coach to use, which will serve to guide the Coaching process.

A teacher’s focus or goal may be related to a standard, competency, or other desired and appropriate child outcome. The form can be used with any curriculum approach and professional resource to guide goals, assessment, and teaching strategies. In the beginning, using a commonly available curriculum-based tool, such as Teaching Strategies GOLD (2010), will scaffold teacher learning by suggesting ways to link documented milestones to planning for learning experiences.

I. Section One – Begin with the end in mind, and plan for preferred results. Write one phrase.

Classroom And Behavior Management Framework

Effective classroom management fosters learning and meets the needs of all students by using active engagement strategies, promoting self-motivation, and creating opportunities for positive social interaction among elementary students. It is crucial for teachers to have a firm foundation for their behavior management system and framework of classroom management based on well-researched behavior management models and systems.

In this assignment, you will develop Section 3, “My Philosophy of Classroom Management” of the classroom management plan.

Identify two classroom management models and two campus wide behavior management systems. Some examples of models and systems are listed below or you can chose others as appropriate. For each of the models and systems selected, write 100-150 words comparing and contrasting the model or system, and identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the model or system. Provide one online resource with information about each model and system.

A critical part of the mentoring process is creating a visible action plan that captures a group’s theory of change. After reading the chapter, focus on the section titled Make Your Project Visible and use Table 8.3 (do not confuse this with Figure 8.3); reflect on how to put a mentoring plan into action. In one-page minimum, address the following questions:

• How might making a mentoring project’s available resources (e.g., the assets that include time, money, partners, research, and available mentoring expertise) visible allow for thoughtful review by a planning team before, during, and after the project?

• How would identifying a mentoring project’s activities and processes (e.g., observing documenting, reflecting, analysis, application, feedback, goal-setting, and modeling) allow for adjustment before, during, and after a project?

Application: Narrative Self-Reflection Paper

Self-reflection is a valuable professional development tool to assess individual strengths, identify areas of challenge, and note best practices. “This requires awareness of one’s own values, cultural bias, philosophies, personality, and style in the effective use of the professional self” (Standard 20, Council for Standards in Human Service Education, 2010, p. 9).

For this Assignment you will reflect on your cumulative experience in the BSHS program.

To Prepare for this Assignment:

  • Review all materials for this program.
  • Review all materials for this course, including your collection of portfolio materials from Weeks 1-4: philosophy statement, artifacts, and rationales.
