When writing an essay, it is important to use a source when you are quoting someone’s text. This is especially when you are stating a fact or giving a statistics. If you do not cite a source to your stated statistics, you need to explain how you obtained the data and how you analyzed it. If you do not cite a source in such a case, then your statistics will be an assumption and biased. For instance, when you state that 20% of deaths in America are heart related, you need to state where you obtained this information. If you are the person who did the research, then explain how you conducted the research. It is very important to differentiate between facts, opinions and bias when choosing a source. If you just copy and paste someone’s work without even analyzing their statement, you might end up being biased yourself yet the original work was not biased. For instance, if you cite an opinion as a fact, your readers will assume that it is a fact yet it may or may not exist. At the end of the day you turn out to be biased. A fact is something that actually exists or has been there, while an opinion is just a suggestion of ehat ought to be. These are two different

Required journal entry 14: Organizing your information

Describe

 

From the course text, there are serveral ways of organizing information effectively. One of the ways is by organizing the information alphabetically. This works well when a person knows the specific topics or the terms that they are looking for. This is therefore the best method when a person knows what they are looking for, otherwise if they have no clue it may not be useful to the reader. The other way of organizing information of by categorizing. This is the broadest way to organize information. The reader can easily know that some information fall in such a category and they can easily understand. The best method that I can work best on is the categorizing method. This is because it will help me avail everything to the reader in a categorical form. Every concept will be grouped according to some standardized characteristics. This will be helpful for any reader that has no clue of the concepts because they will easily identify concepts according to their category. The organization by categorizing can be based on anything that can be easily understood by the reader. Be it color, shape, size, gender, price, or anything else that is applicable.

Reflect

Plagiarism is simply an act of fraud. It involves copying someone’s work, or rather stealing it and lying about it afterward. Someone’s copies someone else’s work and lies that it is his original work, this is called plagiarism. It is appropriate to cite information that involves facts and statistics. These are issues of concepts that have been researched already and you intend to you them, therefore, you need to cite them. When a person states a fact that there are 7.5 billion people in the world, it must be cited because you are not the onr who counted the popilation of the entire world. However, there are issues that do not necessarily need to be cited. For instance opinions, an opinion can either be suggestion or a true thing, but you don’t have to cite it.

Quoting is the direct picking of a statement from someone’s text and using it in your text. This is followed by adding speech marks to the statement and citing the author{s} so that it is known that you quoted a text. Paraphasing is the modification of someone’s statement. meaning. Summary is simplification of the entire text. It is the overview of what the entire text means. The most effective use of quotation is when you are using someone’s facts. It may also be used when you are using someone’s speech in your text, you have to quote it directly. Paraphasing can apply to any statement. You can paraphrase any statement to avoid plagiarism. This means you can re-state someone’s fact or opinion in your own words but retaining the meaning so that it does not look like you copied everything. Summarizing is simplification of a large text by giving out the main points. You may quote or paraphrase the main point of the text

Having an opposing view in your essay gives a higher credit to your essay. This is because you do not just have a biased standpoint but rather you look at both sides of the issues as well as come up with your standpoint on the issue. When you are arguing against an issue like the assisted suicide by doctors, you also have to look at the reason why people are willing to go for an assisted suicide. If you only remain on one side, your essay becomes rigid. No matter how evil the other side is, try to touch two or three points from there before drawing your personal conclusion.

When William Safire acknowledges his opposition, he strengthens his arguments. The reader begins the essay thinking that it is all about the little ruddy cent. However, they come to realize that he has been camouflaging his claim through his construction. In fact, William Safire comes up with a comprehensive rhetorical solution after postulating his aruments. This strengthens the essay and leaves the reader with no option but to hold. This makes him assert a stealing message. When readers comprehend such a stealing message, they are left with the feeling of truth and consciousness about whether we should maintain some out-of-date penny or not.

As a learner, I have gained a lot from this course. For instance I started to learn this course when I had a very shallow writing skill and technique. I even had no idea of the steps of writing. Most of my papers looked pathetic. All along, I have been writing papers not knowing how to organize the work in a proper and systematic way. It never crossed my mind that one needs to thoroughly review his work. I was just too sure about myself such that once I finished writing, it was the final draft ready to post. After going through this course, I have been able to know how to organize my essay. This course has taught me how to write

a proper essay. All the examples in the course have helped me to write proper grammar, check spellings and punctuations as well as avoid writing passive sentences. Organizing my work for the better understanding of the reader. I just discovered that the best way I can organize my work is by categorizing. This is a great way to enable the reader to know the class under which the concept lies. So far, my writing has changed completely and it is changing towards the better side. As per now, I can write a professional essay with a comprehensive progress. I no longer have to throw points here and there without proper formality. I can also write paper without plagiarizing someone’s work because I have learned the essence citing someone’s work. I have also learned to create an essay with both sides of an argument so that I give a clear picture to the reader.

At the beginning of this course, I set some few goals but they were not properly organized. All I wanted to know was how to write an essay that can please whoever reads it regardless of the subject. So far, I have accomplished a better part of this goal. I can write a paper that is free from plagiarism and well-organization. My essay is now free from errors like grammar and spelling mistakes. This means that the course concepts of writing have been important to my writing knowledge. I had not gone through this course, there

are things that I would have done so differently. One of the things is to just write an essay without reviewing it and correcting the errors. This is because I have been too sure about myself such that I believed I could not commit such errors, yet I noticed that I have been committing such errors all along. I would also have plagiarized some works since I hate wasting time to cite someone’s work. However, this course concepts of writing have helped me to become a better writer. In the future, I will be writing an essay by following all the steps of writing processes taught in this course, If it is an argumentative essay, I will have to look at both sides of the argument before I give my standpoint.
