Describe the agency that is requesting a consultation, specifying where their services are located within the continuum of care available in the community.

For this assignment, imagine you have been contacted by an agency in your community to provide consultation on how they might improve their services to clients. The agency is concerned that clients with serious counseling issues are “falling between the cracks” when they are referred to others in the community for intensive treatment. Furthermore, the brief aftercare they provide is not accessible enough to sufficiently support clients as they re-integrate into the community.

Assignment – Week 10

Application: Career Counseling for Clients with Addictive Behaviors

Adjusting assessments and methodologies according to a client’s need is fundamental to the career counseling process. As you prepare for this assignment, consider the various scenarios—an individual’s level of career development and drug addiction stage—that can alter the counseling dynamic.

To prepare for this assignment:

  • Review this week’s      Learning Resources. Focus on the case example of John, on p. 525.
  • Think about how this case      example illustrates how an individual may simultaneously be in different      stages of change with regard to 1) career development and 2) dealing with      drug addiction. Consider the challenges for the counselor and client.
  • Develop a case of your own to      use for this assignment. Consider the client you developed for the Week 3      Application Assignment.

The assignment: (1 – 2 pages)

· Use the template in the Week 10 Resources section of the class to demonstrate, in client/counselor dialogue form, the transtheoretical model of change (TTM), illustrating how you might counsel a client (NOT “John” from the text) who is in two different stages of change: one stage of change for career development (e.g., Precontemplation) and a different stage of change for dealing with drug addiction (e.g., Action).

· Apply the four principles of Motivational Interviewing in your scenario, noting how you are demonstrating them in your dialogue.

· Explain how the scenario you create effectively addresses some of the challenges of working with clients who are in different stages of change for career development and substance abuse.

Preparation

Suppose you have been asked to prepare a presentation for a workshop. Choose one of the scenarios below to present on. For the scenario you choose, select theories to help you frame the problem and create an understanding of the problem for your reader. In your presentation, present possible solutions and support your work with a minimum of three scholarly research articles.

Scenario 1: Mars Mission

You are part of a psychological team planning to prepare and support astronauts during the manned mission to Mars. Your task is to identify solutions for possible psychological problems that may result as part of the trip.

  • Think about potential psychological problems that can occur during preparation for and during space travel. In your presentation, describe the potential problems, so that your reader has a good understanding of the negative psychological impact that astronauts can experience. Consider and discuss possible prevention or intervention ideas in your paper and support your thinking about potential problems and solutions with information you find from the scholarly research articles you selected.
  • Possible search terms: NASA, Spaceflight, Mars 500, Mars 520 (use alone and in the Summon library tool, or in the PsycARTICLES or PsycINFO library databases).
Scenario 2: Office Décor

The company where you work is redesigning office spaces. Your supervisor has tasked you with examining the psychological effect on employees of different decorating options with the goal of increasing productivity.

  • Think about and search for how color and use of space can impact people psychologically. What does the research say about environment and productivity?
  • Possible search terms: Office space, well-being, productivity, applied psychology (use in combinations in PsycARTICLES or PsycINFO).
Scenario 3: Youth Sports

You are coaching your child’s soccer team and want psychologically proven ways to motivate your players.

  • Consider what research says about motivation and sports. What are some specific coaching strategies that can increase enthusiasm and motivation?
  • Possible search terms: Coaching effectiveness, motivation, sport psychology (use alone or in combinations in PsycARTICLES or PsycINFO).
Scenario 4: Anti-Marijuana Campaign

You have been asked to create ideas for an awareness campaign to prevent teenagers from using marijuana.

  • Consider ideas that have a chance to attract adolescents’ attention. What does the research say about prevention?
  • Possible search terms: Drug use prevention, media campaign (use in combinations in PsycARTICLES or PsycINFO).

Instructions

Discuss what types of medical approaches (ECT, prescription medications, psychosurgery, or current medical devises) you would recommend for the patient by referring to studies showing its effectiveness in treating the disorder. (Approximately 75 words)

Assistance is needed in completing the following Assignment.  I have also attached the instructions as a word document in the dropbox below.  I have also added the Case Study “SHONDA” which will be needed to complete the paper.

For this Assignment, start by selecting one of the case studies (accessible from the Course Resources) and develop a patient portfolio. The goal of the portfolio is to identify a disorder and recommend a plan of action to help the patient manage his or her symptoms and change behavior for therapeutic outcomes.

To begin your Assignment, do a search of the Library and the internet. You are also to use course material, but your project should include at least four additional references from the library and/or the internet (your final Assignment must include one library resource). The internet sources you use for the Assignment should be credible. You should not use internet sites such as Wikipedia where anyone can post information or About.com. Your information should be from acceptable psychological or medical societies, such as the National Institute of Health, Web MD, etc.

You will address the following areas that are outlined in the patient portfolio document. Part 2 through Part 4 of the patient portfolio should be a minimum of 675 words. All work should be in the student’s own words with quotes used very sparingly. No more than 10% of the work should be direct quotations. Be sure to address each of the issues with the use of several sources in the form of in-text citations to support your answers, and use proper APA format, including Times New Roman 12-point font. For help with APA writing style, please refer to the APA Quick Reference on Course Resources and the Kaplan Writing Center (accessible from your student home page).

Using the provided template, as-is, develop the patient’s portfolio by addressing the following:

Part 1: Background information about the patient

Provide background information that includes (a) the patient’s disorder, and (b) a list of the diagnostic criteria that the patient meets listed in the DSM-5 under the diagnostic criteria for the disorder.

Part 2: Psychological Approach

Select a psychological theory from the course textbook (chose either a cognitive or behavioral theory). Refer directly to the textbook or an academic source to explain the theory. After explaining the theory, apply it by discussing how it may explain the development of the case study’s mental illness. (Approximately 225 words)

Part 3: Biological Approach

Select a theory from the biological approach from the course textbook (choose either the genetic or neurological influence). Refer directly to the textbook or an academic source to explain the theory. After explaining the theory, apply it by discussing how it may explain the development of the case study’s mental illness. (Approximately 225 words)

Part 4: Sociocultural Approach

Select a theory from the social and cultural or interpersonal relationship approach from the course textbook. Refer to the textbook or an academic source to explain the theory. After explaining the theory, apply it by discussing how it may explain the development of the case study’s mental illness. (Approximately 225 words)

Part 5: Treatment

  1. Discuss what types of medical approaches (ECT, prescription medications, psychosurgery, or current medical devises) you would recommend for the patient by referring to studies showing its effectiveness in treating the disorder. (Approximately 75 words)
  2. Compare and contrast the side effects the patient may experience from the selected type of medical approach and support what benefit the treatment has on the brain chemistry or neurotransmitter activity. (Approximately 75 words)
  3. Discuss psychotherapy options (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy, group therapy, exposure therapy). Explain the chosen therapy and specifically how the patient would benefit from it. (Approximately 100 words)
  4. Provide both short and long-term goals for the patient’s treatment plan. Include accomplishments or behavioral changes you want to see in the patient. (Approximately 75 words)

Part 6: Conclusion

Defend which of the approaches can best explain the development (or cause) of the case study’s mental disorder and why your chosen treatment plan would be the most beneficial plan for the patient (biological approach, psychological approach, or sociocultural approach). (Approximately 150 words)
