Prepare a formal letter to the parents with your recommendations. Include a copy of the worksheet you used with your notes to conduct the risk-benefit analysis.

Risk-Benefit Analysis of a Controversial Intervention

Consider this scenario: The principal of a local school learned about a facility in Massachusetts that uses an electric shock device as a behavior control procedure. For more information on this device, review the Linscheid et al. article. The principal has requested that parents of one of her school’s students allow this procedure as an intervention to stop the student’s elopement and the aggressive behaviors that have caused injuries, including lacerations and a broken finger, to two teachers. The parents contacted you to seek advice on this matter. You conduct a review of the file and discover a functional behavior assessment has been conducted by a BCaBA on these behaviors, but it appears the BCaBA conducted this assessment without the oversight of a BCBA. Also, records indicate some of the previous treatments used to address these problem behaviors included sensory integration therapy and facilitated communication.

For this assignment, complete the following:

  • Consider Bailey and Burch’s risk-benefit analysis model. Recreate and use this worksheet to outline the risks and benefits of this procedure.
  • Analyze at least five relevant BACB ethical code elements that are relevant to this procedure.
  • Prepare a formal letter to the parents with your recommendations. Include a copy of the worksheet you used with your notes to conduct the risk-benefit analysis.

Describe how social media plays into the intent and the actual message. What’s different between the two you chose? What made the ads successful (or not successful)?

We have been looking at successful ad campaigns using social media. Let’s apply this directly and see how this compares with older methods of advertising.

Choose a recent social media campaign, possibly one you interacted with. Below are some possible examples:

  • ALS #IceBucketChallenge
  • Always #LikeAGirl
  • Coca-Cola #ShareaCoke
  • IKEA bookbook video
  • McDonald’s Super Bowl 2015
  • Taco Bell #OnlyInTheApp
  • Virgin America Boo videos

Then consider an older commercial, before social media was (as big) an influence. You can look at famous ads on Youtube.

In a minimum of 3 pages, please do the following:

  • Provide an introduction with a summary of the ads you have chosen, and an explanation of what the stated intent behind the ad is.
  • From there, look at what the ad actually says (like a beer ad might actually be demonstrating that women are sex objects).
  • Describe how social media plays into the intent and the actual message. What’s different between the two you chose?
  • What made the ads successful (or not successful)?
  • What ideas and opinions do you have about the product or brand after reviewing the ads?
  • What can we learn about how businesses use Twitter, Facebook, Linked In, etc. to communicate, network, broaden their customer base, and promote their products/services?
  • Summarize your analysis.

Selection of a Statistical Analysis Approach

Though data analysis occurs after the study has completed a data collection stage, the researcher needs to have in mind what type of analysis will allow the researcher to obtain an answer to a research question. The researcher must understand the purpose of each method of analysis, the characteristics that must be present in the study for the design to be appropriate and any weaknesses of the design that might limit the usefulness of the study results. Only then can the researcher select the appropriate design. Choosing the appropriate design enables the researcher to claim the data that is potential evidence that provides information about the relationship being studied. Notice that it is not the statistical test which tells us that research is valid, rather, it is the research design. Social workers must be aware of and adjust any limitations of their chosen design that may impact the validity of the study.

To prepare for this Discussion, review the handout, A Short Course in Statistics. If necessary, locate and review online resources concerning internal validity and threats to internal validity. Then, review the “Social Work Research: Chi Square” case study located in this week’s resources. Consider the confounding variables, that is, factors that might explain the difference between those in the program and those waiting to enter the program.

By Day 3

Post an interpretation of the case study’s conclusion that “the vocational rehabilitation intervention program may be effective at promoting full-time employment.” Describe the factors limiting the internal validity of this study, and explain why those factors limit the ability to draw conclusions regarding cause and effect relationships.

How does the influence of social media impact concepts like personal fable, invincibility fable, egocentrism, etc.? What are the benefits to social media? (think about technology as a whole as well)

The term “boomerang generation” has been used to refer to children who move back in with their parents after finishing college, graduate school, or some other form of “adult life.” There are numerous articles devoted to this phenomenon. Read the following articles that offer diverse perspectives on the boomerang generation and then answer the questions below.

  1. What were some of family narratives mentioned (perhaps not overtly) in the article on the boomerang generation that you read? Did they come into conflict with the child moving back in with his/her parents?
  2. What are some potential benefits of the impact of being part of the boomerang generation? Some potential drawbacks? Are they evenly balanced?
  3. How do the people who wrote or who were mentioned in the articles manage this new wrinkle in the connection-autonomy dialectic?
  4. Using the guidelines in “Effective Communication in Families” what advice would you give to members of a family experiencing the boomerang effect?Social media and adolescence, is it good? bad? When looking at the current adolescent generation, social media has become an important influencer. How many likes to I have? How many friends do I have? Am I pretty? etc. are common questions that are asked internally. In this chapter, we were introduced to new thinking patterns and concepts related to this developmental stage, such as personal fable, invincibility fable, egocentrism, etc.For this assignment, address the following,
    1. How does the influence of social media impact concepts like personal fable, invincibility fable, egocentrism, etc.?
    2. What are the benefits to social media? (think about technology as a whole as well)
    3. How can social media and/or technology hinder development during this stage?
